A large part of your horses health is a good parasite (deworming) program.
The best way to control any parasites is to have a fecal test performed on your horse. This will allow for the best program for your horse and not a generic program fro a generalized area given out of a retail magazine.
Parasites can be a significant problem in horses. Some horses can have a parasite infection but show no outward evidence, whereas other horses can develop clinical signs ranging from mild illness to severe, life-threatening disease, such as colic (abdominal pain) and colitis (diarrhea). All horses are at risk for exposure to parasites through daily activities such as grazing in a pasture and living in confined stable/barn conditions with other horses.
A wellness examination includes an evaluation of all of your horse’s major organ systems. Dr. Lindsay will use the wellness visit to ask you questions about your horse’s behavior, appetite, exercise habits, and regular activities. This is also an excellent time to discuss any routine diagnostic testing that may benefit your horse or to recommend parasite control, dental care, and any vaccinations that may be due. Sometimes, information obtained during a wellness examination can help detect early signs of illness and address health issues before they progress.
Dr. Lindsay will get to know your horse through physical examinations, wellness screenings and consultations and will learn about his/her lifestyle, personality, health risks, management, and other important information.
Ensuring that your horse receives proper wellness care can enhance your horse’s longevity, health, body condition, and productivity.
Horses can be expensive to own and maintain, and caring for a sick horse can cost much more than maintaining a healthy one, so wellness care is a well-spent investment in your horse’s future. It is encouraged for you to use wellness examinations to take an active role in your horse’s health care maintenance.
